In the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), teams are challenged with building a robot, designed to compete in a unique game, in six weeks. I was a part of the team in my first two years of high school, and I was elected build captain in my second year. During the six-week build season, the team met most weekdays after school to design and build our robot. In my first year, we created a robot (nicknamed "lazarus") that was designed to lift and transport storage bins for the game "Recycle Rush". In my second year, I led the team in designing "Peeves", a robot designed to transport foam balls and cross obstacles in the game "FIRST Stronghold".
FRC was a highly intensive activity, as the tight schedule of the build season made designing our robot very difficult. However, the team was not just focused on competitions. We hosted a workshop at my boy scout troop to earn them their robotics merit badge, we promoted the team at football games, and we started elementary-level robotics teams at multiple schools in our district. I personally mentored a VEX IQ team of about 30 3rd-5th graders at Felty elementary in Waxahachie in my junior and senior years. |
